Southampton Way, Camberwell, c. 1905
These groups of terraces on the north side of Southampton Way are unusual in the size of the properties and the scale of the development.
This is a suburban redevelopment. Until c.1880 there were detached houses with substantial gardens on this site. But after demolition they were replaced with houses designed for multi-family occupation with purpose-built shops to the front of some.
This more intensive housing was typical of this part of north Peckham and Camberwell in the late 19th century.
