Map of New Cross, Lewisham, 1868
In the second half of the 18th century New Cross became an area of market gardens, supplying central London. But that phase ended soon after New Cross Station (now New Cross Gate) opened in 1839.
Land in the area then became more valuable for building purposes and many more houses for City commuters were built.
Only the long leases of the Haberdashers' mansions prevented a more rapid development.
