Bexley Park Woods, 1906
Bexley Park Wood, showing children in a woodland footpath.
The Wood, which lies to the west of Bexley Village, probably derives its name from the fact that it formed part of an enclosed deer park for the use of medieval Lords of the Manor.
Such parks were regular features of estates held by ecclesiastical landlords, and the residence at Bexley of Henry Castelayn, the keeper of the Arch-bishops' parks in the 15th century is obviously significant in this connection.
The second photograph is detail from the first.
