Not all of Rotherhithe's economy was related to the river. Some businesses took advantage of Rotherhithe's isolated position to set up hazardous and, more particularly, polluting enterprises.

Hale's Rocket Factory falls into the former category and Brendram's chemical works near Canada Docks, the latter.
