Railway Approach, Borough, 1863
This view shows the site of the approach to London Bridge Station under construction in 1863 at the time of the extensions to Charing Cross and Cannon Street.
The girder bridge is carrying the track across Borough High Street, and at the same time the station itself was reconfigured.
The extension gave improved access to the West End and so contributed to suburban development along their lines.
St.Saviour's Church (later Southwark Cathedral) is seen in the background.
