New Cross Gate, New Cross, Lewisham, 1840

new-cross-gate-01767-350

This is the junction of New Cross Road (behind and to the right) and Queens Road straight ahead. This was an ideal location for a turnpike gate and booth as it cashed in on traffic travelling on the Dover and Folkestone roads (to the east) and the Old Kent Road (to the City) and Queens Road (to the West End).

The turnpike was abolished in the 1865. The horse dealer was still in business over 60 years later.
