Hither Green Station, Hither Green, c.1898

The railway was built through Hither Green in 1866, and proposals for a station at the Hither Green junction were regularly put forward. But it was not until 1st June 1895 that a station was finally opened.

The railway had the disadvantage of effectively cutting off the communities either side of the railway line.

The coming of the railway ended the building of large detached houses in the area, and as early as September 1865 land for development was advertised as being close to the intended station. Land prices began to rise rapidly and the building programme began to gather momentum.
