Map of Hither Green, 1877

map-01383-350

Hither Green was an area of farms until early in the 19th century, when a small number of large houses began to be built.

The situation had not changed very much by 1877. One large house, Mount Pleasant, had been replaced by Mount Pleasant Road, and the development of middle class housing encouraged by the opening of Lewisham Station in 1849 had begun to approach Hither Green from the north.
