The Dover Castle was the most important inn on Deptford Broadway, its name recalling the final destination of the road that it was on.

With the arrival of the railways in the mid-19th century, coaching inns lost their function as staging posts for long distance travellers.

The stamp at the bottom right of this drawing bears the words "British Museum 6 Nov 1875".
