With only the interruption of St Mary's Church and Lewisham Workhouse and Hospital, Lewisham High Street and Rushey Green formed a mile long shopping experience.

These shops on the west side north of Hawstead Road were Rushey Green's first contribution.

The fenced space to the left was the course of the village stream which ran the whole length of the two roads until it was drained in 1855.
