The vast grid of streets enclosed by Brownhill Road, Verdant Lane, Hazelbank Road, Muirkirk and Fillans Road (the St Germans or Corbett Estate), were laid out mainly in the late 1890s. They reated a landscape of relentless respectability.

Among the new population was an unusually large proportion of the clerical classes.
