Tranquil Vale, Blackheath Village, Blackheath, c. 1880

tranquil-vale-01794-350

This view looks south-east down Tranquil Vale towards Blackheath Village.

The village grew rapidly as a commercial centre in the early and mid 19th century when the area expanded as a prosperous suburb. Its prosperity is evident in the number and luxury of its horse drawn cabs.

The church spire on the left is that of St. Mary's Roman Catholic church, Cresswell Park, and to the right, in the background, is that of St. Michael and All Angels, Blackheath Park.
