Woolwich in the 18th century was a small riverside town dominated by three large government institutions: the Royal Dockyard (The King's Yard) on the west, and the Royal Arsenal (The Warren) with the adjacent Rope yard on the east.

Further east were the vast Woolwich and Plumstead Marshes.

On high ground to the south was Woolwich Common and, on very much higher ground further south, the wild and inhospitable peak of Shooters Hill.
