It would appear that the first licence was taken out for this public house back in April 1692 by a Richard Manning. In 1784 it became known as the Old Black Horse as the licensee at the time had a more modern pub built in Halfway Street called the New Black Horse.

Both pubs continued until 1802 when the name changed again. This pub became just the Black Horse and the one on Halfway Street became Ye Old Black Horse when, in fact, it is the newer pub by 100 years.
