Map of Sydenham, Lewisham, c. 1894
The development of Sydenham was nearly complete by 1894.
Much of the vacant area under the words 'Upper Sydenham' was rescued from the builder to become Wells Park.
An anomaly in Lower Sydenham was the survival of the Old House. The longevity of the owner was the cause: as soon as he died the house was demolished and the garden covered with houses.
The railway formed a social barrier in Sydenham, the area to the west being in general much more affluent than that to the east.
