Map of Southend, Lewisham, 1914

map-01399-350

This map catches Southend at a moment of change, for it was in that year that tram services were extended south from Catford, heralding the transformation of Southend from a village to a suburb. The tram tracks can be clearly seen.

Physically the area had changed little since the 1740s, but twenty years later it would be unrecognisable.
