Trams outside The Green Man, Bromley Road.

The extension of tram services from Catford to Southend in 1914 was a major event in the history of the village, opening up its country pleasures to far more visitors, and making it a possible place of residence for commuters of modest means.

The Green Man (one of the old Southend pubs) had been rebuilt as seen here c.1860. It was soon to be rebuilt once again on a huge scale. The pub has now closed and its future is uncertain.
