Somerset Gardens was built in 1860 and forms a secluded oval occupying an unpromising site between Loampit Hill and the railway.

Its houses were designed by local architect, Alfred Cross, who also built houses on Loampit Hill. Their style and scale shows that they were aimed at the upper end of the suburban market.
