This view of Lewisham Market was taken from the southern end, looking north towards Avenue Road, now replaced by the main entrance to the Lewisham Centre.

In 1903 the market occupied only the southern half of its present site. There were still enclosures of grass north of Avenue Road.

It it not known when the market was founded, but it was already a well-established institution by 1903.
