This view looks south from the junction of Loampit Vale (to the right) and Lewisham High Street (straight ahead). The junction was called the obelisk, though the 'obelisk' was a drinking fountain.

A urinal was later built in front of the obelisk, resulting in enlarging the traffic island.

This view predates the arrival of the Greenwich to Rushey Green tram, which opened in 1890.

Much of the junction was recognisable until over 100 years later when it was radically refashioned into a major roundabout.
