The line of the Thames river bank was straightened by reclaiming land from other wider sections of the bank.

This view looks north towards Lambeth Bridge and Lambeth Palace, showing some of the buildings along Fore Street.

The Embankment replaced, Lower and Upper Fore Street as well as much of Princes Street.
