Tate Library, Brixton Oval, Brixton, c. 1960
View from Lambeth Town Hall, looking towards the Tate Library, Brixton Oval, and the reshaped garden.
The bus in the foreground provides a clue to the changing shape of London from 1960 to the present. It was not uncommon for bus routes to travel from one side of London to the other, in this case from Crystal Palace in the south-east to Golders Green in the north-west via Oxford Street.
The same journey today would take two hours and the route no longer exists, having been replaced by three sectional routes.
