Stables, South Island Place, Brixton, 1964

There were several horses stabled in South Island Place, next to the library, which can be seen on the left.

Perhaps they belonged to local rag-and-bone men.

The R White's lemonade bottle in the foreground was an icon of London life at the time. The bottle was made from thick glass and was returned to the store where it was purchased, a deposit then refunded. The screw top was made of bakelite, not plastic.
