Sandmere Road, Brixton, 1944

A Flying bomb incident, showing bomb damage to terraced houses in Sandmere Road on 1 July 1944.

Although V1 flying bombs were intended for Central London, a British government disinformation campaign led to most of them falling in South London, well short of their targets.

A total of 95 V1s fell in Lambeth killing 250 people and severely injuring a further 709.

This scene shows a direct hit from the V1s one ton warhead. Note the rapid response from the Civil Defence forces in clearing the road of debris.

A postwar housing estate now occupies this site.
