The Thames Flood Barrier was built to protect London from floods caused by tidal surges in the North Sea.

It was opened by H M Queen Elizabeth II in 1984, took 8 years to build and cost £500 million.

The barrier spans the river between Charlton at the southern end and Silvertown to the north.
