Embassy Cinema, Queen's Way, Petts Wood, 1936
Petts Wood is overwhelmingly residential. Estate developer, Basil Scruby, was careful to organise utilities to his underdeveloped streets, to fund the building of a new railway station and to designate areas for shops, but entertainment was provided by private initiative.
The Embassy Cinema, Queen's Way, opened in 1936. It had 1350 seats and for a generation thrived as a focus for the area's social life.
It closed in 1973 and the site was redeveloped as a supermarket.
