Anerley Station Road, Anerley, Penge, c. 1900

Shortly following the Anerley estate, developed in 1851,came the Anerley Station estate, which dates from 1853.

Primarily shops with flats above, it became the commercial centre for the new district of Anerley.

No.12, just before the junction on the right, was the home of the temporary Penge Library opening in 1892. On the left is Anerley station.

Most of the buildings date from 1875 but the booking hall on the left is believed to be, at least partly, the 1839 original.

On the far left is the Anerley Arms, built to replace the tearooms and hotel,of the Anerley Gardens. The shop and pub survive but all the station buildings are gone. The last to go was the 1839 booking hall demolished quickly when a campaign was started to preserve it.
