Looking north-east from the south end of the Parade, the Crystal Palace is seen on the right.

This photograph was taken from the site of the Vicar's Oak, where historically the four parishes of Battersea, Croydon, Lambeth and Southwark met.

Even today four present day boroughs, Bromley, Croydon, Lambeth and Southwark meet at this spot.

As a result it has always been difficult to get any continuity of planning for the Crystal Palace area.

On the left is the White Swan Hotel, dating from the early 19th century, and originally with gardens attached.

It was rebuilt as shown here some time after 1883.

In 1903 Bury F.C. were guests prior to their FA Cup Final encounter with Derby County at the Crystal Palace ground. The accommodation must have agreed with them as they won 6-0.
