By the end of the 19th century, Chislehurst was well on the way to becoming a town.

Chislehurst West (historically Prickend or Pricking) had ceased to be a peripheral hamlet and was becoming the main commercial centre.

Soon to be renamed the High Street, it is shown here decorated for Queen Victoria's diamond jubilee.

The new Police Station (1892) can be seen behind the tree on the right.

My great great grandparents, Henry and Eliza Marsh, were from Chislehurst. In the 1861, 1871 and 1891 census, Henry and his family are recorded as living at Prickend/High Street next to the Fox & Hounds pub, his occupation being master baker. Through your wonderful website I've been able to visit the area my ancestors came from and see how things would have looked for them in the late 1800s, early 1900s.
