Hastings Road, Bromley Common, c. 1895
In the 19th century Hastings Road was simply a continuation of Bromley Common. In this view, the historic Plough Inn on the left, dating from before 1733, has recently been modified in preparation for the development advancing across the common from the north. Note the inn sign opposite, on the wrong side of the road, a tradition that is still followed at some pubs today.
The next phase of development in the 1930s changed the character of the area again. Recently the Plough has closed. The building is now used as a Majestic Wine warehouse.
On the right are two new double fronted Victorian Villas homes of the nurserymen, Lawrence and Cooling, who traded from greenhouses to the rear.
