Sunningvale Avenue, Biggin Hill, Bromley, 1968
Biggin Hill's first development took place in the early years of the 20th century, when plots were sold, typically, at £10 each, and pioneering new residents built their new homes.
Development was unregulated and the new homes were often built of flimsy materials; a product of the difficulty of transporting to such a hilly and remote location, and of the builders' lack of resources.
The bungalow on the left is typical. Also typical is the unmade road, a characteristic of the area not tackled until the 1970s when the area became subject to systematic planning guidance.
