By the 1920s Beckenham had grown away from the rail lines that had inspired its early growth. Trams served Penge from 1906 but never came any further so it was motor buses that filled the gap.

Much of the area was served by Thomas Tilling from the Bromley Garage but there was a need for more capacity.

In 1929 London General opened this new garage in Elmers End Road passing it on to London Transport on its foundation in 1933.

Severely damaged by a V1 flying bomb in 1944, it was quickly rebuilt but succumbed to a reduction in bus traffic in 1986 when it was closed, demolished and replaced by sheltered housing.
