The building of the Martens Grove Estate by local builder Ayling was preceded by vigorous tree felling.

The estate was built on ancient woodlands, previously part of the grounds of Martens Grove house, a mansion of the 1850s.

In the background can be seen sections of drains being laid prior to the start of house building.
